All About Tennessee Honey

How Is It Made?

Tennessee Honey is a blend of whiskey and real honey. Tennessee Whiskeys, by law, go through a very specific distillation process. It’s required that the mash be made from 51% corn (just like bourbon). It’s also aged in charred oak barrels. Unlike Bourbon, Tennessee whiskeys are put through something called the “Lincoln County Process”, whereby the spirit is put through charcoal filtering before it goes in the barrel.

Comparison With Jack Daniels Old No. 7

Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey

You may be wondering how Tennessee Honey compares with regular Jack Daniel’s. The base whiskey used to make Tennessee Honey actually is Old Number 7 (which is what most people picture when they think about a bottle of jack). The addition of the honey makes it a bit smoother to drink and of course sweeter.

How Should You Drink Tennessee Honey

As with all Whiskeys, you can drink it straight, neat, or mixed depending on your preference. Since the flavor and smoothness of the whiskey determines the end taste of all 3 styles, it can make for easier drinking than standard fare. Some people find the sweetness to be a little too strong when drinking straight up, so a mixing with another flavor to cut that down can be helpful. There’s really no right or wrong way to go about it, so just find something you enjoy and stick to it!

Alternatives To Tennessee Honey

Many of the major whiskey distillers offer a honey style liqueur. These include Wild Turkey, Jim Beam, and others.

Q.What's a cheaper alternative to Tennessee Honey?
A.The honey label from Jim Beam tends to run a few dollars cheaper than Jack Daniel’s at most stores. It’s a good alternative, especially if you can find it on sale.

Q.What's a more expensive alternative to Tennessee Honey?
A.Most of the American labels are in the same general price range of around $15-20 for a fifth. Drambuie is a Scotch whiskey honey blend that’s a bit more pricey ($25-30).
