Q.Is Crown Royal XO Top Shelf?
A.Yes! By almost any definition, Crown Royal XO is considered to be a top shelf whiskey. As a blend, many aficionados prefer their single barrels or other small batch options - but a blend will give you consistency, and XO is just that - conststantly quite good!

All About Crown Royal XO

How Is It Made?

Like all of the Crown Royal whiskeys, XO is a blend. In this case, over 50 of their finest are blended together. XO is finished in Cognac barrels, giving it a very unique flavor. XO is produced in Gimli, Manitoba, and though they use a bourbon “style” - they’re still classified as a Whiskey (all bourbon has to be produced in America).

Comparison With Deluxe

Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey

You may be asking yourself, “Is Crown Royal XO better than ordinary Deluxe?”. While that’s a determination up to each person’s individual palette, it is widely regarded as being more drinkable, smooth, and yes - better than the standard bottle in the gold and purple sack. The cognac cask aging process really brings out a smoothness and unique flavor profile that just can’t be matched by the regular fare.

How Should You Drink Crown Royal XO

As with all Whiskeys, you can drink it straight, neat, or mixed depending on your preference. Since the flavor and smoothness of the whiskey determines the end taste of all 3 styles, it can make for easier drinking than standard fare. That said, masking the spirit with mixers is a bit of a shame when you’re paying for the premium version!

Alternatives To Crown Royal XO

There are a lot of great premium whiskeys that are good alternatives to Crown Royal XO. If you want to stick to a Canadian whiskey, check out Caribou Crossing or Pike Creek.

If you’re just looking for another comparable whiskey, and don’t care where it’s made, there is a whole world of choices out there, including Woodford Reserve or 1792 Small Batch. Mass producers include Jim Beam, Makers Mark, and Wild Turkey. Then of course there is a whole world of small batch producers to check out!
